The seventh edition of the extensive photofair spotlights contemporary plus historic practitioners with an experimental approach

Wilting, fleshy flower petals cascade across a picture. The photograph, taken on an iPhone and processed through AI, has echoes of the vanitas still life. It is not a scene that immediately evokes fashion photographer Computer chip Knight’s work: decades of contemporary imagery bursting with colour plus shape. However , look nearer, and the image, one within a series by Knight entitled Roses from My Backyard (2019) – a selection of that was on show at Picture London 2021 – encapsulates the photographer’s style. It really is both deliciously exuberant plus embraces photography’s rapid technical developments.

Knight’s experimental method of photography is one of the myriad factors he is Photo London’s 2022 Master of Photography. The annual photography fair, now in its seventh edition plus returning to its habitual home in London’s Somerset House from this Thursday, will present a more significant showcase of Knight’s work this time around with an exhibit spanning photography, film and sculpture.

Elsewhere, the fair’s second major show has echoes of the experimentation permeating the first. It pays homage towards the late Frank Horvat (1928–2020), a fashion photographer in whose playful black-and-white images presented models sporting haute couture in contrasting everyday settings and who, like Knight, approached advancements in photographic technology with curiosity.

Alongside the main shows, a global collection of galleries and marketers will showcase smaller displays. Well-established sections of the fair also return, including the Breakthrough section, which spotlights rising artists and, this year, is certainly curated by Tim Clark simon, writer, curator and editor-in-chief of 1000 Words. At the same time, critic and author William A Ewing has convened a much-anticipated talks program of in-person and on-line events.

Photo London takes place from Somerset House, London, from 12 to 15 Might 2022.
